We offer a broad range of consulting services including fitness for service assessments, failure analysis and welding, external loading analysis and training workshops.   

Position Purpose

  • The main function of the Principal Engineer is to provide engineering consulting generally related to the evaluation of pipelines and components in an oil & gas environment to help our clients evaluate if their infrastructure is reliable and meets regulatory standards. More specifically, the role is to perform fitness for service assessments of buried or above ground pipelines and piping components.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with existing and potential clients in support of project execution and business development activities. Meet a 70% utilization target.
  • Prepare project proposals for existing or new clients to secure new work under direction of supervisor or other senior technical staff.
  • Provide information to clients by assembling and summarizing data; preparing reports; making presentations of findings, analyses, and recommendations under direction of supervisor or other senior technical staff.
  • Perform fitness-for-service assessments including but not limited to flaw analyses, remaining life calculations, and flaw interaction criteria.
  • Performs quality review of all engineering draft reports to ensure accuracy and high-quality products are being delivered to clients.
  • Manage projects to ensure client deliverables are within required timelines and budget requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports following Kiefner templates and providing the results of fitness-for-service analyses.
  • Review and update all Kiefner templates periodically to meet industry and client requirements and demands.
  • Complete weekly time sheets, expense reports, and monthly budget forecast.
  • Ensure required project set up documentation is submitted, project budgets are tracked, and the invoice is accurate to meet client requirements
  • Communicate independently with clients in support of project execution and business development activities.
  • Travel to the client sites as required to support project execution.
  • Travel to industry conferences and committees in support of business development.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Mentor and train engineers to execute projects through on the job training in safe work practices, technical skills, critical problem solving, and compliance with company policy.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and legal work environment for all staff ensuring all company policies are being followed.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to work independently while having the critical judgement to request assistance when necessary.
  • Ability to multi-task and properly execute multiple simultaneous assignments under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written communication including technical report writing.
  • Possess experience with methods available to evaluate remaining strength and remaining life of pipeline flaws.
  • Must have knowledge of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 192 and 195, as well as industry codes and standards such ASME B31.3, ASME B31.4, ASME B31.8, ASME B31.8S.
  • Must have experience with pipeline failure modes, fracture mechanics and fatigue, as well as a general understanding of pipeline integrity related to defect behavior, operations, maintenance or any other issues than can affect the serviceability of a pipeline.
  • Knowledge of financial principles for tracking projects to budgetary requirements balanced with profitability expectations.
  • Ability to communicate and cooperate with diverse groups of people.
  • Must have working knowledge of MS Office Suite of products.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Civil, Welding, or Metallurgical engineering discipline.
  • Masters or PhD of Science in an engineering discipline a plus.
  • 10+ years of supervisory experience.
  • 5+ years of project management including financial experience.
  • 10+ years of industry experience.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Certificates and Licenses Required

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work inside an office environment, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
  • Occasional visits to field sites will require employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions in temperature extremes and inclement weather.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and working environment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
  • Ability to travel when required, nationally, up to 25% of the time.
